Elevate your Mom style

Having a capsule wardrobe, a signature piece and a uniform means you will always have something to wear. As a Mom you currently do have a “uniform”. The cloths you almost always reach for on a day to day basis. The question is, how do you elevate your Mom Style, without going crazy or broke?

Analyze your current style

As an example, my uniform is leggings, tank tops, ankle socks, zippered hoodies and red running shoes.

Now how can I elevate this uniform so I can feel stylish and still be comfortable? By using fashion guide lines on the wardrobe I already reach for daily.

My Signature piece is Red Running shoes. I always have them. I always wear them. I always buy them. I LOVE red running shoes. They just make me feel good.

My Capsule pieces are the tank tops and zippered hoodies. I have 3 neutral tank tops and 5 colored tank tops, as well as 1 black hoodie, 1 grey hoodie and 2 colored hoodies. These are considered capsule pieces because the colors and materials very rarely change.

The Uniform pieces are leggings and ankle socks. The colors, patterns and materials of these items are always changing. However the style stays the same.

So why this particular choice of wardrobe? It comes down to affordability, ease and convenience. As a busy Mom of small children comfortable, easy to care for and easy to clean clothing is essential to me.

What’s the next step?

So how do you elevate your current Mom style in to something more stylish or professional, that you will actually wear? By maintaining the things you value about your current wardrobe.

First, ease. Ease of wear and ease of care. I like being able to wash, dry and care for my own cloths. A having kids and kids activities means stains will happen. So dry clean only and special care materials are a hard NO for me. So I value wash and wear materials.

Next is ease of wear. If I have worn the same style of leggings for 2 years, do you really think I will suddenly be reaching for tailored suit pants daily?

Spoiler, NO!

However, in todays fashion climate, it is absolutely possible to achieve the look you want while keeping the comfort you crave.

So now I can have a tailored look suit pant, made of breathable material, with a stretchy waist band. Having these features in alignment with my comfort preferences means I’m going to look stylish, and be more likely to reach for these pants more often.

The next point to consider is the affordability of your clothing. The meaning of affordability is going to be completely based on your current financial environment. That being said we are going to touch on the topic of Fast Fashion.

A Look at the Dark Side

As most of us have heard, cheap clothing is usually termed fast fashion. This is clothing and accessories mass produced, usually overseas, with cheap labor, using even cheaper materials. This has greatly contributed to the massive amount of waste impacting ecological environments all over the world.

What’s more, the continued push of low quality clothing in to mainstream fashion, is creating a heavy financial burden to already low income people and families. I go into more depth on this topic in Fast fashion is keeping you poor.

Suffice it to say having to buy more cloths more often, due to poor quality materials and manufacturing, gets expensive quickly. This becomes a cycle that is hard to break out of.

Fortunately, we are in the age of online connection and convenience. This means that you have access to a great many choices when it comes to both clothing and sustainability. It’s also a convenience to have your clothing delivered directly to your door.

Time to Work it Momma!

So how does knowing all this help you elevate your Mom style?

Let’s pull it all together.

The first step to elevate your Mom style is understanding quality over quantity. More is not better if it doesn’t make you look good and feel good.

Also, better quality clothing, made with better quality materials, will cost more upfront. But the cloths will both last longer, and look better on you, with proper care.

With this in mind, look at the items you consider capsule pieces. These items get worn daily and very rarely change in color or material. In this case, the goal is to look for higher quality material and manufacturing when you need to purchase new pieces. Quality stitching, durable material, ect.

For the uniform pieces, (always the same style but changes in color, pattern and material) you are going to have to decide what you value most about these items, then look for those qualities in the new pieces. Also look for quality manufacturing here too.

After that, it’s knowing that buying 1 or 2 quality items, that you will enjoy wearing for months, is much better than buying 6 cheap pieces that you need to replace in 6 weeks.

Your future looks Stylish!

You don’t have to look like you are walking the fashion runway to feel stylish. And lets face it, with having kids that look wouldn’t be sustainable anyway.

In the end, to truly elevate your Mom style, it needs to start with elevating the quality of materials and manufacturing in your favorite cloths. Cloths last longer and just look better when they are made better.
