6 Tips to change your life with no money.

Have you come in to a time in your life where you are seeking change? You’re done with all the nonsense, tired of feeling stuck or low, and no longer wanting to play small. However, with low wages and an ever increasing cost of living, there is no money available to move to a new place or buy a new look. And money is necessary in order to effectively change your life, right?

Well, no, not really. My life experiences have taught me that the most effective way to change your life is in fact to change yourself. There’s no right or wrong way to do this, but there are a few key things that everyone can do to help get them well on there way to changing there life without spending more money.

What is the cause for this need to change?

There are many things that can trigger this feeling of needing to change our lives . There is growing up in, and continuing to live in, poverty. Unexpected job loss or mass layoffs. Economic downturns and recessions. Systemic, generational and cultural oppression. Civil unrest or political unease. Even just realizing the city, job or educational intuition you’ve chosen is no longer something that feels right.

There are so many things that can contribute to the feeling of needing to change our lives. And so many more that prevents us from having the funds we believe necessary to make the changes.

Is money necessary to make life changes?

To be perfectly honest, we as a western society have been conditioned to believe that the more money you have, the more instant the gratification or reception of what you want. Truly there are valuable, free resources available everywhere if you know where to look.

I have spent the majority of my three (and a bit) decades on earth living in poverty. I never owned my own home, I haven’t been able to maintain my own vehicle, and I have used food banks more often than I care to admit to. Personally, I have spent thousands of dollars looking for resources and mentors and courses to help me make my life better. But to no avail. I later came to the realization that the simplest and most effective way to change my life for the better, sustainably, is in fact to change myself. And Changing me doesn’t cost anything but time.

Tip 1: Develop an Attitude of Gratitude

It is hard to be thankful for a life that we so desperately want to change. But when you find things in your everyday life that you can feel gratitude for, you start create a positive mindset and a positive mindset will help create a better environment. This doesn’t mean that we have to be thankful for a crappy job this just means we can be thankful we have the ability to work. That we do have food to eat and a roof over our heads. We can be grateful for what we have while working towards changing our lives to make all of these things better for us.

Tip 2: Read Daily

Reading is an excellent way to expand your mind and to learn new things. It’s also a fantastic way to relax and unwind at the end of the day. Find a library or a book club, these are still free resources for finding all kinds of books on all kinds of topics. Now I’m not saying to run out and buy in books by the dozen because we are learning to change our lives without spending money. But there are many many ways to get access to books and, although I love the solid feeling of a book in my hands, there are others who prefer listening to audiobooks or podcasts, and that works just as well too.

No matter how you consume the material it still achieves the same goal, providing material that contributes to a positive growth of both mindset and skills.

Tip 3: Create a daily schedule or routine

Now, what to do with all that new information? We turn it in to daily tasks that become our new habits! And how do we do that? By scheduling it in to our day and making new, effective routines.

The key to making these daily routines sustainable is to use scheduling methods that already work for you. Whatever you use to remember appointments, kids activities or project deadlines is going to work for new habits too.

Tip 4: Learn a new skill or improve an existing one.

Learning something new is a challenge, and challenges allow for growth. The skills you learn or improve on don’t have to be a massive undertaking either. You can learn something as simple as knitting a dishcloth or as complex as knitting a lace gown.

Don’t forget to find a way to apply these skills in your life too.

Tip 5: Change your existing environment

You may not be able to move out of where you are right now, but that shouldn’t stop you from changing the environment your in. Remove items that no longer serve you, paint or wallpaper if you can, rearrange the furniture. Working with what you have to make a better place to live in, is an affective way to see the life changes your making.

However, if you are in an unsafe environment your primary goal should be safety. Either moving to a new location, repairing the home your in or removing unsafe people or objects.

Tip 6: Assess your relationships.

It’s been said many times by many successful people, “You are the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with.” If you spend the majority of your days with people who complain about there life and do nothing to change it, your likely to behave the same way.

So you may have to seek out new associates that are living their lives like you want to live yours. Find People whos values are in line with yours, people who you can have meaningful conversations with. That way you will improve the quality of your life as the quality of your relationships improve.

Bonus Tip: Take control of your personal finances

I know it seems counter intuitive but, DON’T MAKE A BUDGET! At least not yet.

The first thing you need to do is figure out where your money came from and where it went in the last year. Yup, a full year. Why? Because some payments happen annually, some bi-annually, others are monthly, weekly, etcetera. Once you have a clear picture of your cash flow, your then able make decisions on your budget. Your able to set money aside for future expenses, and they won’t be a shock when it comes time to pay.

Remember personal finances are just that, personal. So your budget methods will grow with the life changes you make.

Conclusion

The biggest life changes come through everyday habits done consistently. Who you choose to be has the biggest impact on your life. Growth is more important than drastic, shocking changes. Changing your life doesn’t have to cost anything but time and consistency.
